2.3 Million Reasons to Check Your Kids' Toothbrush...

A peer-reviewed study just confirmed what no parent wants to hear — and what the oral care industry has been quietly ignoring.

You've swapped the plastic containers for glass...

You read or Yuka'd every label in the supermarket...

The sunscreen is mineral. The water is filtered. The cleaning products are non-toxic...

You've done 95% of the work.

But this morning, you handed your child a toothbrush — the same one you grabbed off the supermarket shelf without a second thought...

And they scrubbed plastic directly into their mouth...

Not metaphorically. Literally...

I don't blame you. I was doing exactly the same thing — handing my own kids the colourful plastic toothbrush every parent recognises from the supermarket aisle.

Until I read the study...

2.3 million. That's the number that got me...

A 2025 peer-reviewed study published in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety confirmed something disturbing…

The nylon bristles on a standard toothbrush shed up to 2.3 million microplastic particles per year — directly into the mouth of whoever is using it.

Particles smaller than 100 micrometres.

Invisible to the naked eye.

Impossible to spit out.

Your child brushes twice a day.

That's 730 times a year...

Every morning. Every night...

And it gets worse the longer you keep the brush — the study found the shedding rate increases with duration of use.

The older the toothbrush, the more it sheds...

This part left me shocked...

We used to assume microplastics moved through the body and out the other side...

We were wrong...

Microplastics have now been detected in human blood. In lungs. In the liver. In placental tissue. In the human brain. In the meconium of newborns — babies are being born with plastic already inside them...

In March 2024, the New England Journal of Medicine published a landmark study:

researchers examined arterial plaque from 304 patients and found microplastic particles embedded in the tissue of more than half of them.¹

This isn't emerging science anymore. It's established.

I'm not here to tell you a toothbrush did that...

No study has measured where one brush's particles travel, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise...

But I looked at that pile of evidence, then looked at the brush in my child's hand shedding millions of particles a year into the most absorbent part of their body...

I decided I wasn't comfortable being the enabling this plastic exposure...

Every morning. Every night.

When I knew there must be an alternative...

So I started researching...

And the first thing I learned humbled me...

Your bamboo toothbrush has a dirty little secret...

If your families brushing with bamboo toothbrushes, you probably feel like this article doesn't apply to you...

It does... Keep reading...

Flip your bamboo toothbrush over. Look at the bristles.

If they're white, uniform, and shiny — they're nylon.

Petroleum-based plastic. The exact same material shedding microplastics in the study above.

The handle changed...

The bristles didn't...

And the bristles are the part that goes in your child's mouth...

This was the moment it clicked for me. I'd felt so good about that bamboo switch...

But I'd been brushing my kids' teeth with a wooden handle and a mouthful of plastic the entire time...

"But mine are castor oil bristles — those are plant-based, right?"

I thought that too...

So I dug in...

Castor oil bristles do start as a plant, that part's correct...

Then the oil is heated under pressure and converted into a material called Nylon-1010.

Problem solved right?

Wrong...

Nylon-1010 is chemically identical to traditional petroleum based nylon...

Plant-based origin. Plastic-based result.

It doesn't biodegrade easily, and it sheds microplastics like any other nylon bristle.

It's the same plastic in your child's mouth — just with a greener story printed on the box...

A greener label doesn't change what's going in my kids' mouth twice a day...

So I asked a different question...

What did humans use before plastic?

Nylon was invented by DuPont in 1938...

Before that, every toothbrush on earth used natural bristles...

Boar hair. Natural keratin fibres, woven into wooden handles.

No microplastics. No petroleum. No BPA. No phthalates.

Fully biodegradable. Used safely for centuries.

Turns out the solution wasn't new technology...

It was old technology...

The kind the plastic industry replaced not because it was worse...

But because plastic was cheaper...

A boar bristle toothbrush does exactly what a nylon one does...

It cleans teeth...

It just does it without shedding a single microplastic particle...

Without sitting in landfill for 500 years...

Without a drop of petroleum...

You've done the hard swaps. This is the easy one...

Look at everything you've already changed...

Glass food containers. Healthier water bottles. Mineral sunscreen. Non-toxic cleaning products. Natural shampoo. Organic bedding.

Every one of those was harder, more expensive, and more inconvenient than swapping a toothbrush...

And yet the toothbrush — the one thing that goes directly into your child's mouth, twice a day, every single day...

Is still plastic...

Same routine. Same brushing time. Same clean.

The only thing that changes is what's touching your child's teeth...

I eventually tracked down a brand bringing back the original, healthy version of toothbrushes:

100% natural boar hair bristles woven directly into a steam-carbonised bamboo handle.

No toxic glues.

No nylon.

No microplastics.

Every component fully compostable — bristles, handle, all of it.

It costs about $0.08 a day. Less than the organic apple juice in the fridge...

It's the easiest and most effective swap...

And somehow it's the one almost every parent misses...

I've link to the one I got for my kids below...

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the bristles sourced?

The bristles come from the food industry — they're a by product that would otherwise go to waste. No animals are harmed specifically for bristles. Boar hair is the only truly plastic-free bristle option that won't shed microplastics into your mouth.

How are the bristles sterilised?

Every bristle is scoured, washed, and steam-sterilised at 100°C for 6 hours. They arrive sterile, odourless, and ready to use straight out of the box.

Are these suitable for children?

Yes. The head is sized smaller to fit little mouths, making it easy for children to manoeuvre. As with any toothbrush, we recommend adult supervision for younger children and that kids brush under guidance until they're confident on their own.

What are the different colours for?

Each brush comes in its own colour so everyone in the family knows whose is whose — no more mix-ups in the bathroom. Perfect for households with kids.

Are the bristles too firm for kids?

Boar bristles start firm and soften after a few uses. For children, we recommend running the head under warm water before the first few brushes to soften the bristles faster. The naturally tapered tips are gentler on gums than machine-cut nylon. If your child prefers a softer feel, soaking in warm water before each brush helps.

How long does each toothbrush last?

Each brush lasts 2–3 months — the same replacement cycle dentists recommend. A 4-pack covers you for a full year.
